Boyd’s approach

Why counseling?

How would counseling help me? How would counseling help my marriage? First, it helps because you are taking the initiative to talk to someone about what is wrong. When we make the effort to dig deep and talk about what is wrong, only then can we begin to find solutions to our problems.

Human relationships are complicated, and there are hundreds of things that can hinder good relationships: our self-concept, our view of the world, others, and God. I am a Christian Counselor, so I believe that God created us to function well. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Philippians, encouraging them to rejoice in life regardless of their trials. He exhorted them not to be anxious, but to present their needs to God and let the peace of God rule over their hearts. He encouraged them to think about things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable (Philippians 4: 4-8).

I certainly agree with the Apostle that our thinking has a lot to do with our peace of mind. I consider myself a cognitive counselor, meaning I help people evaluate their thinking patterns. Often, we develop patterns of negative thinking early in life that interfere with our joy and fulfillment.

I like working with men, couples, and parenting issues. These are areas that I specialize in. The reason counseling works for many people is that they hear themselves and they hear what others are saying to them. We have to stop and confront what we are doing or not doing if we want to experience change.

Marriage & family

Understand one another.
Grow together.

Every family has challenges, but if we figure out what they are and talk them out, we can improve family relations. Sometimes what we think is the problem is only the symptom of a bigger problem. Helping couples discover the strengths and weaknesses of their marriages can bring relief and improve relationships. Sometimes, without realizing it, couples emphasize their weaknesses while ignoring their strengths. I help them see what they have so they appreciate it more, while also helping them learn to deal with those weaknesses more effectively. You can change for the better once you decide to work on the problem. It is necessary to decide to invest time and effort in counseling to achieve the necessary change. What we learn about each other and ourselves is crucial in helping us change.

Benefits & approach

Practical help
for lasting change.

Some benefits include conflict resolution, a greater sense of meaning and purpose in life, increased self-worth, and an awareness of one’s choices. Learning to make decisions with a long-term perspective yields much better outcomes. In each counseling session, I aim to help you develop the skills you need to accomplish your goals. Counseling helps us talk about things we often cannot talk about on our own. My approach to counseling is practical, using techniques and principles that best fit each situation. I work to help you see the other perspective. Secondly, I concentrate on how we think and how our thoughts become patterns and ultimately influence our behavior. Thirdly, I help the person design a specific strategy to implement appropriate behavior. Successful counseling helps marriages and families appreciate each other and enjoy their relationships.

A reflection from Boyd

When anxiety steals your peace

Who doesn’t experience Anxiety in this life? It is more common among humanity than any of us care to admit. No one is exempt. We are anxious about what has happened, what is happening, and what will happen. Anxiety is a thief that steals our peace and enjoyment in life. We worry about outcomes, whether they will be good or bad. We worry about people—our friends, family, and ourselves. We worry about our health and our money. These feelings of Anxiety come from a host of different reasons, from things not going our way to being mistreated, insulted, or neglected. Interestingly, the older we get, the more Anxiety we are prone to experience.

Jesus told us not to worry: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothes? ( Matthew 6:25). Jesus’ words are profound! Life has to be more—it has to have meaning and purpose, God-given purpose. We know that God put each of us here for a reason.

Anxiety is nothing new, because Solomon, in his book of Ecclesiastes, gives us some good advice on how to lessen it. Solomon said, “So then, banish anxiety from your heart and cast off the troubles of your body, for youth and vigor are meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 11:10). He knows from experience that our world, in its broken state, brings us loss and many troubles. He tells us to cast off these troubles. In other words, rather than dwelling on what has happened to us, which usually perpetuates the problem, cast it off by giving it to God. Peter also tells us: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
